The wife of legendary classical dancer Kilocharan Mohapatra and Odyssey dancer Lakshmibria Mahabatra has died of age-related illnesses. She was 86 years old.
Sources in the family said that Mahabatra died at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday at his residence. He was survived by his son Rattikant Mahabatra and daughter-in-law Sujata Mahabatra. Both of them are Odyssey artists.
Prime Minister Navin Patnaik mourned his death and praised him for remembering his contribution to promoting the Odyssey dance. Lakshmibria, who started her dance career at a very young age from the Annapurna Theater in Puri in 1947, met Clocharan Mahabatra at the Annapurna Theater in Cuttack. Kelucharan was famous in the dance arts of Odissi and Gotipua, and was playing drum in theater at the time.
